Bairath - Ancient City in Rajasthan

Bairath is a historical place, situated at a distance of about 86 km from Jaipur on Shahpura-Alwar road. The existence of this place dates back to the times of Mahabharata when Bairath was known as Virata Nagar. According to the legends the Pandavas are believed to have spent a year in Bairath while they were in exile. The historical importance of this place can be gauged from the fact that ancient artifacts and remains of Maurya, Mughal and Rajput have |
been excavated from this place. Some of the excavations are believed to have belonged to the Mauryan Empire which predicts that this place thrived as a Buddhist establishment.
Bairath has turned out to be one of the hottest tourist destinations as significant monuments belonging to ancient era and dynasties can easily be found here. Of these the splendid Mughal Gardens is one of the main attractions along with the painted "Chattris" built by Jahangir, son of Akbar. Other significant tourist attractions at Bairath include Bhim-ki-Dungri, which is believed to be the adobe of Bhim and Bijak-ki-Pahari, which is a grey granite hill with remnants of two Buddhist monasteries dating back to 634 A.D.
One of the major tourist attractions at Bairath is the Banganga Fair which is celebrated annually on the full moon day of Vaishakh in April-May. Apart from these there are lots of tourist places of interest in Bairath which attracts tourists from India and abroad to explore this place and take part in various excursion activities.
