Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan, holding a glorious history. It was founded on 18 November 1727 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, who ruled the city from 1699-1744. Initially, the city of Amber was his capital but when this capital city started facing huge accommodation and water crisis, Maharaja Jai Singh decided to build a new city for adjusting the growing population.
As far as the construction of the city is concerned, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was very keen on its security aspects. So, he checked with numerous architecture books as well as architects before making the layout of Jaipur. But because, the king was a lover of Astronomy, Mathematics and Astrophysics, he liked the advice of great Brahmin scholar of Bengal called Vidyadhar Bhattacharya. Finally, under the architectural guidance of Vidyadar Bhattacharya, Jaipur was built on the classical base principles of Vastu Shastra. Even famous attractions of today like City Palace and the famous Jantar Mantar were designed by Maharaja Jai Singh himself. Hence, this royal city is recorded in history as the first planned of city great India.
When the Price of Wales visited Jaipur in 1853 during the reign of Sawai Ram Singh, the whole city was painted pink to welcome him, and right from that time, jaipur is also known as pink city.
After the death of Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur slowly went under the British rule. And soon after that in 1947 with the independence of India, alike other Rajput states, the pink city also became the part of newly formed Indian state of Rajasthan. And then in 1956, finally Jaipur was declared the capital city of Rajasthan.
