Nahargarh Fort, Jaipur - The Tiger Fort
 |
The famous Nahargarh Fort of Jaipur is a magnificent fort built in 1734 by Sawai Raja Jai Singh. It is regarded as being the first amongst the three forts built by the Maharaja.
Location: The Nahargarh Fort stands high on the rugged terrain of the Aravalli Hills & offers a glittering view of the pink city of Jaipur. It is located just below the Jaigarh Fort, at a distance of 6 km from the city of Jaipur. |
History: The Nahargarh Fort along with the Jaigarh & Amber Fort was meant to serve as a defense ring for the city of Amer. Though most part of the fort was constructed in 1734, many additions were made by the succeeding rulers.
Nahargarh can be translated to mean the "abode of tigers" & thus it is often called as "Tiger Fort". A mysterious legend behind the naming of the fort suggests that the fort gets its name from Prince Nahar, whose spirit is said to have haunted the place once. It is believed that he agreed to leave the fort only on the condition that the fort is named after him & thus it continues to be called the Nahargarh Fort.
Attractions: Of the numerous buildings that Nahargarh Fort houses, the most appealing is the Madhavendra Bhawan built by Sawai Ram Singh II. Once used as a picnic spot by the royal family, it houses a series of interconnected rooms & halls. The connecting corridors are adorned by colorful frescos. However, the major attraction of the fort is the spectacular view it offers of the Man Sagar Lake & the city spread at its foot.
Tourists visiting the Nahargarh Fort can enjoy a quick meal or refreshments at the Durg Cafeteria located just above the entrance.
Though most of the earliest construction of the Nahargarh Fort is in ruins today, the further additions continue to charm visitors, making Nahargarh Fort one of the most recognized symbols of Jaipur's royal heritage.
